Workshop description:

In this workshop, you will learn about the cyanotype technique and create small works of art in blue.

This old photographic printing process (developed by astronomer Sir John Herschel in 1842), also known as iron blue printing, does not require a camera. We will place plants and other materials on pre-coated solar paper as well as on self-sensitised paper to be exposed to the sun later.

During the final watering process, the shadows of the objects placed on the paper will appear in white and various shades of blue. A wonderfully simple process that fascinates anew every time, because it leaves a lot of scope for experimentation and improvisation, and because there is room for so many different things, from the simple beauty of a plant photogram to detailed experiments with additional materials, everything is possible.

We will get to know the diversity of this technique and at the end of these three days, everyone will take home a small, fine collection of newly created pictures and postcards.

The cyanotype offers the wonderful opportunity to take snapshots that arise from the encounter of heaven & earth with a sheet of paper, created by the creative nature of a person. Nature, with its small and large wonders, is the basis for our creative design, because the material we use for our creations comes from the earth, and the sunlight in turn exposes the images.

We would like to thank Design ab Hof for their hospitality and the opportunity to hold this workshop here.

Workshop leader

Ángela Tröndle, born in Salzburg in 1983, grew up in a family of musicians and enjoyed a varied musical education in her childhood and youth. From 2001 to 2010, she studied music education, jazz singing and jazz composition at the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz. In addition to her musical projects, the exchange with artists from other fields has always been very important to Tröndle, for example with the visual artist Daniel Domig and the dancer & choreographer Mirjam Klebel.

Since 2021, Ángela Tröndle has been working intensively in the visual arts alongside her activities as a musician, composer and teacher. In addition to watercolour and collage, she mainly works with the cyanotype technique. From May to June 2024, her first major solo exhibition "Landscapes of a quiet mind" ran at the Sargfabrik in Vienna, showing almost 40 works from the past 3 years.
