Workshop Description

This workshop focuses on sculptural work with large-format soapstone (talkstone) sourced from the Rabenwald quarry. You'll learn how to handle traditional sculpting tools and embrace a material-sensitive approach as the foundation for shaping your stone. Starting from a natural boulder, each participant will create a unique piece – transforming raw stone into a carefully formed and polished sculpture. We're inviting you to fully engage with this creative process!

The course encourages individual expression in abstract, non-representational sculpting. Exploring the diverse possibilities of form is a central aim, helping you gain confidence in working with larger formats. The average size of the soapstones is approximately 30 × 30 × 50 cm.

The workshop takes place outdoors, near the hunting lodge at the IMERYS Talc soapstone quarry in Rabenwald.

We would like to thank Imerys Talc Austria GmbH for the excellent cooperation and for providing the open-air studio at Rabenwald.

Please bring:

Work clothes (for both fair and wet weather), work gloves, head covering, safety goggles, sturdy work shoes, and—just in case—plasters and elastic bandages.

Material contribution:
A fee of approximately €50 (depending on the size of the stone) will be collected on site. This covers the soapstone and the provision of appropriate tools by the course instructor.

Price:

€ 380,- (excl. Materialkosten)

Workshop Instructor

Martin Gollowitsch, also known as GOLLOMAR, was born in 1969 in Leoben, Austria. He works as a sculptor and artist using a variety of materials. With a background as a carpenter and joiner, his artistic focus lies in working with wood, which he explores and highlights in diverse ways.

Through his close collaboration with his father, art educator and artist Manfred Gollowitsch, and their many years of co-leading the soapstone sculpture workshop, working with stone has become a second artistic pillar for him – as reflected in several of his works placed in public spaces.

He runs a studio in Graz, where, alongside sculptural pieces, he also designs and produces furniture and lamps.
