Workshop description:

The art of creating sculptures from residual materials such as wood, sheet materials or acrylic glass is the theme of this workshop. Every year, large quantities of materials are thrown away or incinerated. The workshop raises awareness of the fact that this supposed waste can be exciting and valuable raw materials for works of art.

The focus is on both artistic and craft aspects: As a participant, you will learn to consciously perceive shapes and volumes in order to develop and implement your own ideas. At the beginning, there is an introduction to the safe use of tools such as saws, chisels and cordless screwdrivers. However, we deliberately work with minimal use of machines so that you can continue to work independently and creatively after the workshop.

Whether you want to design an abstract sculpture, create a usable object or simply try out different materials and techniques and their possible combinations - the workshop offers space for your creative ideas and imaginative creations. In addition to a large selection of materials, inspiring art and craft materials are also available to train your artistic and crafting eye.

The aim of the workshop is to combine art and sustainability, open up new perspectives on materials and unleash your creativity.

Workshop leader

Simon Reitmann was born in 1999 in Rottenmann, Styria, Austria, and grew up in Upper Austria. After graduating from the Master School for Sculpture at the Ortweinschule in Graz, he is currently studying Sculpture and Transmedial Space in the class of Tobias Urban and Ali Janka (Gelitin) at the University of Art and Design Linz, as well as TransArts – Transdisciplinary Art at the University of Applied Arts Vienna.

In 2021, he was awarded one of four Ortwein scholarships from the Province of Styria, which included an exhibition at the Museum of History in Graz. His works can be found in the Art Collection of Upper Austria and the collection of the Styrian Provincial Government – Neue Galerie Graz.

Clear lines and forms characterize his works just as much as the desire to depict them in motion. Reitmann explores various materials and their inherent properties in his work. He draws inspiration from everyday life, mentally picking things up, taking them apart, and reassembling them. Graphically inspired elements also appear repeatedly in his creations.
